What is Sacrifice?
June 13, 2020
[I have been asked to speak to the rite of sacrifice for today. We know that in Torah specif sins were spelled out and their sacrificial requirements as well. The problem was the sacrifices did not change the heart of the one making the offering. Those ordinances pointed to the need for repentance and restitution but not to heart changes. So what is different today?]
sacrifice G2378 From G2380; sacrifice (the act or the victim, literally or figuratively): - sacrifice.
G2380 A primary verb; properly to rush (breathe hard, blow, smoke), that is, (by implication) to sacrifice (properly by fire, but generally); by extension to immolate (slaughter for any purpose): - kill, (do) sacrifice, slay.
[So in order to sacrifice we must kill! Today the Torah itself rules we should not offer blood sacrifices because there is not set-apart place in which to do so. Yet we are commanded to sacrifice!]
(Heb 10:1-4 KJV) For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. 10:2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins. 10:3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year. 10:4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.
[Your conscience drives you to repent and offer something to pay for the wrong doing. This act may allow you to think everything is okay, but it does not effect the heart. The heart remains sinful, if not with intent at least with the propensity toward sin.]
(1Co 10:18-22 KJV) Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar? 10:19 What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing? 10:20 But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to Almighty: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils. 10:21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Master, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Master's table, and of the table of devils. 10:22 Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?
[When we take part in activities displeasing to Yahweh, the worship of what the world worships, we are inciting Yahweh’s wrath. Today blood sacrifices would bring the law down on our heads. Yet many sacrifice to obtain the goods and respect of the world. What do they sacrifice? Time, money, and dedication. What are the gods that Yahweh’s people worship today and call it no sin? Jobs that take away time from true study of scripture and prayer, not to mention family. Amusements that cost many dollars, therefore more time from the family in the home. Less time for daily interaction and influence on, teaching and learning, the building of a two way relationship between parent and child. Religious activities that do not include the family and their interests, but remove your influence in the home. Really we are all guilty from time to time of being selfish with our time. My family can testify how carefully I guarded my ‘private time’, shutting them out from my thoughts and feelings. Did I not rob them? If this is true in the earthly family how much more so in our relationship with Yahweh.]
(1Co 10:27-29 KJV) If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake. 10:28 But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is Yahweh's, and the fulness thereof: 10:29 Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience?
[If you do not know what is set before you, food or activity, and you trusted the one who invited you to not lead you into temptation [why else would you be there] then your conscience should not trouble you. But if they inform you of some irregularity you should refuse that your former stand not be called into question. If you still partake have you not led them into doubting what you have taught in the past? Better to not go where questionable activities take place. To forego pleasure that another weaker person cannot partake of without being destroyed is a sacrifice that is pleasing to Yahweh.]
(Rom 12:1-2 KJV) I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of Almighty, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, set-apart, acceptable unto Almighty, which is your reasonable service. 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
[The body spoken of here is not just the physical body, but every thought, word, and deed of our person-hood. To put Yahweh’s requirements before the world’s clamor for all we are is a sacrifice. Yet it is what our hearts should desire even when our flesh is weak. If we do only what is required [reasonable service] we are paid servants! It is when we go the extra mile that we truly are sacrificing.]
(Exo 21:1-6 KJV) Now these are the judgments which thou shalt set before them. 21:2 If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing. 21:3 If he came in by himself, he shall go out by himself: if he were married, then his wife shall go out with him. 21:4 If his master have given him a wife, and she have born him sons or daughters; the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out by himself. 21:5 And if the servant shall plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free: 21:6 Then his master shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an awl; and he shall serve him for ever.
[This speaks to an Hebrew servant, but all who enter through Yahshua have claimed the place of a servant. When we enter the covenant through Yahshua we are stating that we desire a relationship of servitude forever. We have entered into this relationship by adoption, be you Jew or Gentile. We were chosen by the Master to be among the called and we have chosen to reply in the affirmative. All servants should reflect the morals and ethics of their Master. When we say one thing and do another we take away honor from the one we call Master. Our right to demand is yielded [sacrificed] to the Masters plan for us if we were sincere in our pledge.]
(Php 4:18 KJV) But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odor of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, well pleasing to Almighty.
[Here Paul is praising those who have sent an offering from their need, therefore it is a sacrifice, just as the widows mite was accepted as such.]
(Heb 10:5-10 KJV) Wherefore when He cometh into the world, He saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared Me: 10:6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. 10:7 Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of Me,) to do thy will, O Almighty. 10:8 Above when He said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin Thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law; 10:9 Then said He, Lo, I come to do thy will, O Almighty. He taketh away the first, that He may establish the second. 10:10 By the which will we are set-apart through the offering of the body of Yahshua Messiah once for all.
[Since Yahweh commanded the rites why were they displeasing to Him? Because the hearts of men were not changed by them. They did not feel the weight of their sins, nor see the unfairness to the animals that paid the price for men’s sins. Nor were their hearts engaged to despise the actions that brought them to the door of the tabernacle in the first place.
So Yahweh sent Yahshua, His Son, to pay the price for us. If we are able to love we should be moved to love them both for this sacrifice. My heart is not yet that engaged that I would willingly sacrifice my disobedient children for those who love me, let alone for those who hate me. We all, obedient and disobedient, are His children and He loves us all. But He is ever closer to those that love Him for they willingly draw nearer to Him. How do you draw nearer?]
(Joh 14:15 TS2009) “If you love Me, you shall guard My commands. a Footnote: See also Joh 14:21 and Joh 14:23, Exo 20:6, 1Jn 5:2-3 and 2Jn 1:6.
(Joh 8:42-45) Yahshua said to them, If Almighty was your Father you would have love for Me, because it was from Almighty I came and am here. I did not come of Myself, but He sent Me. 8.43 Why are My words not clear to you? It is because your ears are shut to my teaching. 8:44 You are the children of your father the Evil One and it is your pleasure to do his desires. From the first he was a taker of life; and he did not go in the true way because there is no true thing in him. When he says what is false, it is natural to him, for he is false and the father of what is false. 8:45 But because I say what is true, you have no belief in Me.
[If we love Yahweh we will love His son! So it needs to be that we must first acknowledge Yahweh exists and claim Him as Master of our lives before we can love Yahshua for He reflects the Father perfectly. Without this our ears will be shut for we have given our allegiance to the enemy by default. So when we acknowledge Yahweh we are sacrificing our total connection to the enemy. Most of the world acknowledges Yahweh exists or something does else there is no other reason for our being. Yet until we let the Father into our hearts and desire a relationship with Him we cannot have a relationship with the true Messiah Yahshua. Many today think they have a speaking relationship with Them both, but they do not keep Their commandments, thus the door is not truly open. The enemy gives then what satisfies the earthly heart, but for truly hungry hearts only a heart filled with Their spirits will be enough. To allow Them into our hearts we have to sacrifice our ‘rights’ and accept the truth and allow Them to change those hearts into obedient loving hearts.]
(Heb 8:8-13 BBE) For, protesting against them, He says, See, the days are coming when I will make a new agreement with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah; 8:9 Not like the agreement which I made with their fathers when I took them by the hand, to be their guide out of the land of Egypt; for they did not keep the agreement with me, and I gave them up, says the Most High. 8:10 For this is the agreement which I will make with the people of Israel after those days: I will put My laws into their minds, writing them in their hearts: and I will be their Almighty, and they will be My people: 8:11 And there will be no need for every man to be teaching his brother, or his neighbour, saying, This is the knowledge of the Most High: for they will all have knowledge of Me, great and small. 8:12 And I will have mercy on their evil-doing, and I will not keep their sins in mind. 8:13 When He says, A new agreement, He has made the first agreement old. But anything which is getting old and past use will not be seen much longer.
[After Yahshua’s sacrifice, when the temple is destroyed, the sacrifices were forbidden by Yahweh’s Torah. Yahweh had always had people whose hearts were fastened on Him, but they were few and far between. Now He has sent Yahshua to show all peoples His heart for them, not by accepting their sacrifices, but by His own sacrifice. With the acceptance of Their sacrifice for us we have an open door to the throne of mercy where repented sin is forgiven never to be recalled again by the Father. So what is to be our sacrifice to be today?]
(Heb 13:15 BBE) Let us then make offerings of praise to Yahweh at all times through Him, that is to say, the fruit of lips giving witness to His name.
[Offerings and sacrifices have the same synonyms except that sacrifice hints at a price being paid. So if it is our lips giving up what are we giving up? Yes it means we are to praise Him, but it also means that ALL OUR Uttering s should be pleasing to Him. Words that would not be found on Yahshua’s lips should not be found on our lips. Should evil and good issue from the same fountain? If they do then the evil will pollute the good. So let us offer the sacrifice of our lips continually!]
