What Are Idols?
December 5, 2020
[We are told to put away all idols. We are told to not worship idols. As we learned in another study worship is to bow down to, to pay homage [pay special attention to] or make offerings to.]
(Jer 10:1-5 KJV) Hear ye the word which Yahweh speaketh unto you, O house of Israel: 10:2 Thus saith Yahweh, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. 10:3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. 10:4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not. 10:5 They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.
[Here we are given two things men worship. Much attention is given to the heavenly bodies, many use them to tell their daily activities, others to tell the future fulfillment of prophecy. We recognize the christmas tree and most who have them do not look at them as idols, but: they spend time and money to get one and then again to decorate it, and again they sit and admire it.]
(Psa 115:1-9 KJV) Not unto us, O Yahweh, not unto us, but unto Thy name give honor, for Thy mercy, and for Thy truth's sake. 115:2 Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is now their Almighty? 115:3 But our Almighty is in the heavens: He hath done whatsoever He hath pleased. 115:4 Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men's hands. 115:5 They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not: 115:6 They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not: 115:7 They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat. 115:8 They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them. 115:9 O Israel, trust thou in Yahweh: He is their help and their shield.
(Psa 135:15-18 KJV) The idols of the heathen are silver and gold, the work of men's hands. 135:16 They have mouths, but they speak not; eyes have they, but they see not; 135:17 They have ears, but they hear not; neither is there any breath in their mouths. 135:18 They that make them are like unto them: so is every one that trusteth in them.
[So those that worship idols and those who make them have mouths but they cannot speak truth, they have eyes but they cannot see truth when it is presented, they have ears but they cannot discern truth when they hear it. The idols are as worthless as those who worship them for they have no power, they cannot move or speak nor can they give a hand up. Verse 9 is the answer, Yahweh is a help and shield for those who worship Him. How many times must we read and hear these words until they are sealed as truth in our hearts. I do not intend for you to use these scriptures to beat up our Catholic brethren or those who have trees in their living rooms or front yards. These words are to build us up and remind us not to slip into bad choices.]
(Hab 2:18-20 KJV) What profiteth the graven image that the maker thereof hath graven it; the molten image, and a teacher of lies, that the maker of his work trusteth therein, to make dumb idols? 2:19 Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it. 2:20 But Yahweh is in His set-apart temple: let all the earth keep silence before Him.
(1Co 12:2 KJV) Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led.
(Rev 13:11-17 KJV) And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. 13:12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. 13:13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, 13:14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. 13:15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. 13:16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: 13:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
[Image makers and those that promote their use are teachers of falsehoods, and some of us used to be among them. Note I said used to be. But because we were we should understand how those still engaged therein feel about this teaching. I remind you to offer the words of salvation to those that are interested, do not press them on those who have shut the heart, mind and spirit to this truth. Revelation gives the last call for idol worshipers to repent, but now the price could be your life if you give up the idol.]
(Isa 46:1-2 KJV) Bel boweth down, Nebo stoopeth, their idols were upon the beasts, and upon the cattle: your carriages were heavy loaden; they are a burden to the weary beast. 46:2 They stoop, they bow down together; they could not deliver the burden, but themselves are gone into captivity.
(Isa 41:21-24 & 29 KJV) Produce your cause, saith Yahweh[speaking to the idols]; bring forth your strong reasons, saith the King of Jacob. 41:22 Let them bring them forth, and shew us what shall happen: let them shew the former things, what they be, that we may consider them, and know the latter end of them; or declare us things for to come. 41:23 Shew the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that ye are gods: yea, do good, or do evil, that we may be dismayed, and behold it together. 41:24 Behold, ye are of nothing, and your work of nought: an abomination is he that chooseth you. 41:29 Behold, they are all vanity; their works are nothing: their molten images are wind and confusion.
[Both the idols and their worshipers went into captivity. Yahweh challenges them to tell the future and what it will bring to past if they indeed be gods/mighty ones, and they cannot produce.]
(Isa 44:9-18 KJV) They that make a graven image are all of them vanity; and their delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses; they see not, nor know; that they may be ashamed. 44:10 Who hath formed a god, or molten a graven image that is profitable for nothing? 44:11 Behold, all his fellows shall be ashamed: and the workmen, they are of men: let them all be gathered together, let them stand up; yet they shall fear, and they shall be ashamed together. 44:12 The smith with the tongs both worketh in the coals, and fashioneth it with hammers, and worketh it with the strength of his arms: yea, he is hungry, and his strength faileth: he drinketh no water, and is faint. 44:13 The carpenter stretcheth out his rule; he marketh it out with a line; he fitteth it with planes, and he marketh it out with the compass, and maketh it after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man; that it may remain in the house. 44:14 He heweth him down cedars, and taketh the cypress and the oak, which he strengtheneth for himself among the trees of the forest: he planteth an ash, and the rain doth nourish it. 44:15 Then shall it be for a man to burn: for he will take thereof, and warm himself; yea, he kindleth it, and baketh bread; yea, he maketh a god, and worshippeth it; he maketh it a graven image, and falleth down thereto. 44:16 He burneth part thereof in the fire; with part thereof he eateth flesh; he roasteth roast, and is satisfied: yea, he warmeth himself, and saith, Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire: 44:17 And the residue thereof he maketh a god, even his graven image: he falleth down unto it, and worshippeth it, and prayeth unto it, and saith, Deliver me; for thou art my god. 44:18 They have not known nor understood: for He hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand. 44:19 And none considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire; yea, also I have baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh, and eaten it: and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree? 44:20 He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?
[Like Thomas there are a vast number of people who have to be able to see, feel, hear, yes and taste a thing in order to believe it exists. These are the ones who fall victim to idol worship. But there are also those who join them just for the company and fellowship. Papa used to say, “birds of a feather flock together”, and it is so for if they would be willing they would be able to hear.]
(Isa 45:20-23 KJV) Assemble yourselves and come; draw near together, ye that are escaped of the nations: they have no knowledge that set up the wood of their graven image, and pray unto a god that cannot save. 45:21 Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I Yahweh? and there is no Almighty else beside Me; a just Almighty and a Saviour; there is none beside Me. 45:22 Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am Almighty, and there is none else. 45:23 I have sworn by Myself, the word is gone out of My mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto Me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.
[There is only one Almighty, only one creator, only one savior, provider, protector, life giver. The day will come when ever knee shall bow and every tongue swear to this truth.]
(1Co 8:9 KJV) But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.
[Because we know that the work of mans hands have no power we serve Yahweh and therein are free. We know a ‘thing’ is nothing so we could own a statue or painting, etc. of earthly things and not sin, but those who are still in that mode or have just left it might see that as permission for the same and they might fall back into their worship. It is the same with food. We are to live so that none of the do not’s nor the do’s are wrongly applied and we give a poor example. There are many things besides those images that can be properly said to be idols in our hearts: sports, cooking, cleaning, acts of charity, social standing, wealth, family, personal appearance, etc.. If any action or thing gets a disproportion share of our time or material wealth, even our emotions and respect, they can become idols.]
(Tit 1:13-16 KJV) This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith; 1:14 Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth. 1:15 Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. 1:16 They profess that they know Yahweh; but in works they deny Him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
[And I say, ‘ Let it be so’ and again, ‘let it be so’]
(Rev 2:1-5 KJV) Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith He that holdeth the seven stars in His right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks; 2:2 I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: 2:3 And hast borne, and hast patience, and for My name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted. 2:4 Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. 2:5 Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.
(Rev 2:8-10 KJV) And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive; 2:9 I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan. 2:10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.
(Rev 2:12-17 KJV) And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges; 2:13 I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan's seat is: and thou holdest fast My name, and hast not denied My faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was My faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth. 2:14 But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication. 2:15 So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate. 2:16 Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of My mouth. 2:17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.
(Rev 2.18 -26 KJV) And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of Almighty, who hath His eyes like unto a flame of fire, and His feet are like fine brass; 2:19 I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first. 2:20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols. 2:21 And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not. 2:22 Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds. 2:23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am He which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works. 2:24 But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden. 2:25 But that which ye have already hold fast till I come. 2:26 And he that overcometh, and keepeth My works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:
(Rev 3:1-4 KJV) And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of Almighty, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead. 3:2 Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before Almighty. 3:3 Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee. 3:4 Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with Me in white: for they are worthy.
(Rev 3:7-13 KJV) And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith He that is set-apart, He that is true, He that hath the key of David, He that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth; 3:8 I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name. 3:9 Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee. 3:10 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. 3:11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown. 3:12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of My Almighty, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of My Almighty, and the name of the city of My Almighty, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from My Almighty: and I will write upon him My new name. 3:13 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
(Rev 3:14-19 KJV) And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of Almighty; 3:15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. 3:16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of My mouth. 3:17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: 3:18 I counsel thee to buy of Me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. 3:19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
[All of Yahweh’s children fall into one or more of the above types of worshipers at sometime in their walk. Let none of us fail to serve with the ardor of first love, nor let us not fail to see and thank Yahweh for His presence in our daily lives.]
