To Serve or Not
August 1, 2020
[Many are the discussions over what is allowed by Yahweh in regards to serving on a day designed to high light the worship of Yahweh and the same day being a day of rest and who gets to rest. So once again we will dissect His word and seek His will in the matter.]
Servile H5656 From H5647; work of any kind: - act, bondage, + bond servant, effect, labour, ministering (-try), office, service (-ile, -itude), tillage, use, work, X wrought.
H5647A primitive root; to work (in any sense); by implication to serve, till, (causatively) enslave, etc.: - X be, keep in bondage, be bondmen, bond-service, compel, do, dress, ear, execute, + husbandman, keep, labour (-ing man), bring to pass, (cause to, make to) serve (-ing, self), (be, become) servant (-s), do (use) service, till (-er), transgress [from margin], (set a) work, be wrought, worshipper.
[Imagine my surprise when I searched several versions for the word servile and found as follows:
The KJV uses the word only in Leviticus and Numbers, and the meaning is the same throughout.
The Tree of Life, a Jewish Messianic publication, uses ‘regular work’ rather than servile.
The Literal Translation substitutes ‘no work of service’.
The Beginning Bible English “no field work’
The English Standard Version ‘no ordinary work’
All the others stick to ‘servile work’ so who decided that women were excluded from this command? No matter the century you live in food preparation has always been labor intensive. Yet unless you are serving fresh or cooked meat no refrigeration is required to set out the day before cheeses, crackers, dried or pickled meats, vegetables and fruits. Boiled eggs can be safely set out over night in the shell. All can be prepared ahead of time on trays and each person can serve themselves thus eliminate any persons serving others. Each person can also clean up after their self. I know the ill and young must be served, but only as necessary. I am sure others can imagine how to accomplish a ‘no servile’ meal, for as in Eden food is what it is about, our appetites. Except for the BBE narrowing the prohibition down to field work. they all forbid work on the weekly Sabbath. All are in agreement with the words, but they still allow, expect in most places, women to prepare and serve food. It is not only food preparation we need to look at. Some group activities are in service to others and should be looked at as well. This is such an important subject. We are to be an example to the world at large and our families, friends, and neighbors. This is not a small thing, it is rebellion if we have a proper understanding and still insist on having things our own way. So what days are we to refrain from any service?]
(Lev 23:5-8 KJV) In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is Yahweh’s passover. 23:6 And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto Yahweh: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread. 23:7 In the first day ye shall have an set-apart convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein. 23:8 But ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto Yahweh seven days: in the seventh day is an set-apart convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein.
(Num 28:16-18 KJV) And in the fourteenth day of the first month is the passover of Yahweh. 28:17 And in the fifteenth day of this month is the feast: seven days shall unleavened bread be eaten. 28:18 In the first day shall be an set-apart convocation; ye shall do no manner of servile work therein:
(Lev 23:15 & 21 KJV) And ye shall count unto you from the morrow after the sabbath, from the day that ye brought the sheaf of the wave offering; seven sabbaths shall be complete:...23:21 And ye shall proclaim on the selfsame day, that it may be an set-apart convocation unto you: ye shall do no servile work therein: it shall be a statute for ever in all your dwellings throughout your generations.
(Num 28:25 KJV) And on the seventh day ye shall have an set-apart convocation; ye shall do no servile work.
(Num 28:26 KJV) Also in the day of the firstfruits, when ye bring a new meat offering unto Yahweh, after your weeks be out, ye shall have an set-apart convocation; ye shall do no servile work:
(Lev 23:23-25 KJV) And Yahweh spake unto Moses, saying, 23:24 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an set-apart convocation. 23:25 Ye shall do no servile work therein: but ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto Yahweh.
(Num 29:1 KJV) And in the seventh month, on the first day of the month, ye shall have an set-apart convocation; ye shall do no servile work: it is a day of blowing the trumpets unto you.
(Num 29:6 KJV) Beside the burnt offering of the month, and his meat offering, and the daily burnt offering, and his meat offering, and their drink offerings, according unto their manner, for a sweet savour, a sacrifice made by fire unto Yahweh.
(Lev 23:26-32 KJV) And Yahweh spake unto Moses, saying, 23:27 Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an set-apart convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto Yahweh. 23:28 And ye shall do no work in that same day: for it is a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you before Yahweh your Almighty. 23:29 For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day, he shall be cut off from among his people. 23:30 And whatsoever soul it be that doeth any work in that same day, the same soul will I destroy from among his people. 23:31 Ye shall do no manner of work: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. 23:32 It shall be unto you a sabbath of rest, and ye shall afflict your souls: in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye celebrate your sabbath.
(Num 29:7 KJV) And ye shall have on the tenth day of this seventh month an set-apart convocation; and ye shall afflict your souls: ye shall not do any work therein:
(Lev 23:33-35 & 29.12 KJV) And Yahweh spake unto Moses, saying, 23:34 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, The fifteenth day of this seventh month shall be the feast of tabernacles for seven days unto Yahweh. 23:35 On the first day shall be an set-apart convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein. 29:12 And on the fifteenth day of the seventh month ye shall have an set-apart convocation; ye shall do no servile work, and ye shall keep a feast unto Yahweh seven days:
(Lev 23:37-39 KJV) These are the feasts of Yahweh, which ye shall proclaim to be set-apart convocations, to offer an offering made by fire unto Yahweh, a burnt offering, and a meat offering, a sacrifice, and drink offerings, every thing upon his day: 23:38 Beside the sabbaths of Yahweh, and beside your gifts, and beside all your vows, and beside all your freewill offerings, which ye give unto Yahweh. 23:39 Also in the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when ye have gathered in the fruit of the land, ye shall keep a feast unto Yahweh seven days: on the first day shall be a sabbath, and on the eighth day shall be a sabbath.
(Num 29:35 KJV) On the eighth day ye shall have a solemn assembly: ye shall do no servile work therein:
[All the set-apart days are mentioned in Numbers, including the New Moon as the beginning of months. We have two witnesses of what Yahweh commanded. The rest of scripture tells us how the people responded. Please understand that the response of the people does not change the law of Yahweh. The Jews made the wave sheaf offering into a minor feast thus clouding the issue of the counting of the weeks. They set aside the feast of the New Moon, yet it is given place with the Sabbath.
The new moon and the Sabbath are tied together in: 2 Ki. 4.23, Isa. 66.23, Eze 46.1, Amos 8.5, and Col. 2.16. In Gal. 4.10 they were still observing the beginning of the month.
We all have free choice! We must first establish what is truth. I accept scripture as truth, no work of any kind for anybody on the Feast high days, all of them! I have resisted working in the kitchen or working on the mailings during the high days in the past. I will continue that policy, but I will also prepare food that does not require refrigeration for my personal use on the high days in the future. I will do that because I believe that is what I am commanded to do. But I will also encourage others to do the same that we not bring into question our obedience to scripture and our desire to live pleasing before our Father and Elder Brother. That is my decision, you must reach your decision for you will stand before the judge to defend that decision one day, as will I.]
[The following were given me Sabbath am before the meeting I believe as a warning and encouragement.]
(Isa 30:1 KJV) Woe to the rebellious children, saith Yahweh, that take counsel, but not of Me; and that cover with a covering, but not of My spirit, that they may add sin to sin:
(Isa 30:8-10 KJV) Now go, write it before them in a table, and note it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever: 30:9 That this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of Yahweh: 30:10 Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits:
(Isa 35:1-10 KJV) The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose. 35:2 It shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice even with joy and singing: the magnificence of Lebanon shall be given unto it, the excellency of Carmel and Sharon, they shall see the splendor of Yahweh, and the excellency of our Almighty. 35:3 Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees. 35:4 Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your Almighty will come with vengeance, even Almighty with a recompence; He will come and save you. Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. 35:6 Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert. 35:7 And the parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water: in the habitation of dragons, where each lay, shall be grass with reeds and rushes. 35:8 And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of set-apartness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein. 35:9 No lion shall be there, nor any ravenous beast shall go up thereon, it shall not be found there; but the redeemed shall walk there: 35:10 And the ransomed of Yahweh shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.
