Two or One?
May 2, 2020
[We are going to look at the scriptures and see what happened at Gergesenes.]
(Mat 8:28-29 BBE) And when He had come to the other side, to the country of the Gadarenes, there came out to Him from the place of the dead, two who had evil spirits, so violent that no man was able to go that way. (Mat 8:29 And they gave a loud cry, saying, What have we to do with You, You Son of Almighty? Have you come here to give us punishment before the time?
[Every version of the scriptures that I have agree with that there were two men in the place of the dead who were possessed by more than one unclean spirit, and they both cried out, or did they?]
(Mar 5:2-8 BBE) And when He had got out of the boat, straight away there came to Him from the place of the dead a man with an unclean spirit. 5:3 He was living in the place of the dead: and no man was able to keep him down, no, not with a chain; 5:4 Because he had frequently been prisoned in chains and iron bands, and the chains had been parted and the bands broken by him: and no man was strong enough to make him quiet. 5:5 And all the time, by day and by night, in the place of the dead, and in the mountains, he was crying out and cutting himself with stones. 5:6 And when he saw Yahshua from far off, he went quickly to him and gave him worship; 5:7 And crying out with a loud voice he said, What have I to do with you, Yahshua, Son of the Most High Yahweh? In Yahweh's name, do not be cruel to me. 5:8 For Yahshua had said to him, Come out of the man, you unclean spirit.
[The man spoke, or did the evil spirit speak? Does it make a difference? Yahshua is recognized for who He was and His power was also given respect.]
(Luk 8:27 BBE) And when He had come to the land, there came to Him a certain man from the town who had evil spirits; and for a long time he had had no clothing on, and was not living in a house but in the place of the dead.
[Mark, whose sir name was John gives the most descriptive account, but was he there? He is first mentioned in the book of Acts and was not among the disciples. Still Luke agrees that there was one man, but disagrees on how many spirits there were. Mark says one, but Luke and Matthew say plural, more than one. They came in a boat that contained the disciples and Yahshua, so probably not. So does it make a difference? Yes it does for the end says there were a legion. But does it have any bearing on the end of the story? This is the one of the reports that gender disbelief in those given to arguments who claim we cannot trust the scriptures for there are discrepancy's within. Ask any one who has taken statements from eye witnesses of the same event. Rarely are they the same. One notices one thing, another has a different perspective. Mark is not shown to be an eye witness so his account holds the lesser weight.]
(Mat 8:30-34 BBE) Now there was, some distance away, a great herd of pigs taking their food. 8:31 And the evil spirits made strong prayers to Him, saying, If you send us out, let us go into the herd of pigs. 8:32 And He said to them, Go. And they came out, and went into the pigs; and the herd went rushing down a sharp slope into the sea and came to their end in the water. 8:33 And their keepers went in flight to the town and gave an account of everything, and of the men who had the evil spirits. 8:34 And all the town came out to Yahshua; and seeing Him they made request that He would go away from their part of the country.
[All three accounts agree on the upshot, the man was set free and the demons went into the swine and drove them into the sea. Why would Yahshua allow the destruction of personal property? Should Jews have had swine as a possession?
The lesson is the same! When those possessed of demons want freedom it is available through Yahshua.
I want you to notice that Yahshua left when asked to do so.
It is also plain that not all demons when cast out are restrained from further evil. Are they not all cast out into darkness and weeping or gnashing of teeth?]
(Mat 8:10-12 BBE) And when these words came to the ears of Yahshua He was surprised, and said to those who came after him, Truly I say to you, I have not seen such great faith, no, not in Israel. 8:11 And I say to you that numbers will come from the east and the west, and will take their seats with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven: 8:12 But the sons of the kingdom will be put out into the dark, and there will be weeping and cries of pain.
(Mat 25:30 BBE) And put out the servant who is of no profit into the outer dark: there will be weeping and cries of sorrow.
(Mat 24:48-51 LITV) But if that wicked slave says in his heart, My Lord delays to come, 24:49 and begins to beat his fellow servants, and to eat and to drink with the ones drinking, 24:50 the Lord of that slave will come in a day in which he does not expect and in an hour which he does not know, 24:51 and will cut him in two, and will appoint his portion with the hypocrites. There will be weeping and gnashing of the teeth.
(Mat 22:11-13 RV) But when the king came in to behold the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding-garment: 22:12 and he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding-garment? And he was speechless. 22:13 Then the king said to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and cast him out into the outer darkness; there shall be the weeping and gnashing of teeth.
(Luk 13:26-28 RV ... then shall ye begin to say, We did eat and drink in Thy presence, and Thou didst teach in our streets; 13:27 and He shall say, I tell you, I know not whence ye are; depart from Me, all ye workers of iniquity. 13:28 There shall be the weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of Yahweh, and yourselves cast forth without.
[Imagine my surprise when we find that it is those who claim to worship and follow Yahweh and Yahshua who are cast out into the darkness. All are accused of wickedness, iniquity, or unrighteousness. All are surprised by this judgment. They claim to be Yahweh's servants, the forgiven of Yahshua, but their works have declared them unfit for the kingdom.]
(Mat 7:15-16 BBE Be on the watch for false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inside they are cruel wolves. 7:16 By their fruits you will get knowledge of them. Do men get grapes from thorns or figs from thistles?
(Act 26:20 BBE) But I went about, first to those in Damascus and Jerusalem, and through all the country of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, preaching a change of heart, so that they, being turned to Yahweh, might give, in their works, the fruits of a changed heart.
[Two examples: the false prophets who preach one life and lead another style of life. It is up to us to be sure of the one we listen to and pattern our lives after their teachings are living what they teach. It is not hard to find out if you are willing to take the time and look them up on the internet. Spend the $1 and get the full story. If you don't do internet have someone do it for you, but you owe it to yourselves, if you want to sit with elders and learn from them in the kingdom. Read all of Luke 13 and get the entire story. They wanted the gifts but they did not want to do the work required to have changed lives. Change is hard and extreme change is extremely hard and who is willing to go the extra mile? Your heart has changed but have your friends, your leisure time activities, your speech, your budget of assets, etc. It is not just one thing it is the whole nine yards! It is hard for those who were living a decent life, but for those who had strayed from the so called normal life of decency it is a mountain covered in loose shale that slips and slides so it seems truly one step forward and two steps back. Still with a encouraging person to hold them accountable it is easier to not become discouraged and give up.
I really thought this lesson was going to be about demon possession, but there are always those who need the encouragement and we all need to be ready to give it. You do not have to be on the mountain top to encourage others. By reaching out you help yourselves as well, for to do for others always lifts the doer up not down.
So this is the next morning and I have been pondering the question asked in Mat. 8.29 by the demon: have you come to punish us before the time? The demons appear to know the time table for their destruction and knowing ask why if they are to be destroyed has the time been shortened.
(Rev 12:7-12 BBE) And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels going out to the fight with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels made war, 12:8 And they were overcome, and there was no more place for them in heaven. 12:9 And the great dragon was forced down, the old snake, who is named the Evil One and Satan, by whom all the earth is turned from the right way; he was forced down to the earth, and his angels were forced down with him. 12:10 And a great voice in heaven came to my ears, saying, Now is come the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our Yahweh, and the authority of his Messiah: because he who says evil against our brothers before our Almighty day and night is forced down.
12:11 And they overcame him through the blood of the Lamb and the word of their witness; and loving not their lives they freely gave themselves up to death.
12:12 Be glad then, O heavens, and you who are in them. But there is trouble for the earth and the sea: because the Evil One has come down to you, being very angry, having the knowledge that he has but a short time.
(1Pe 5:5-11 BBE) And in the same way, let the younger men be ruled by the older ones. Let all of you put away pride and make yourselves ready to be servants: for Almighty is a hater of pride, but He gives grace to those who make themselves low. 5:6 For this cause make yourselves low under the strong hand of Yahweh, so that when the time comes you may be lifted up; 5:7 Putting all your troubles on him, for he takes care of you. 5:8 Be serious and keep watch; the Evil One, who is against you, goes about like a lion with open mouth in search of food; 5:9 Do not give way to him but be strong in your faith, in the knowledge that your brothers who are in the world undergo the same troubles. 5:10 And after you have undergone pain for a little time, the Almighty of all grace who has given you a part in his eternal glory through Christ Jesus, will himself give you strength and support, and make you complete in every good thing; 5:11 His is the power for ever. So be it.
[We know from experience that evil is alive and well here on earth. Hopefully we all, also know that 1Pe.5.7 and also 5.10 is true, as true today as it was the day it was written. So Be It! ]
(Rev 11:15-19 BBE) And at the sounding of the seventh angel there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Most High, and of His Messiah, and He will have rule for ever and ever. 11:16 And the four and twenty rulers, who are seated before Yahweh on their high seats, went down on their faces and gave worship to Yahweh, saying, 11:17 We give You praise, O Most High Yahweh, Ruler of all, who is and who was; because You have taken up Your great power and are ruling your kingdom. 11:18 And the nations were angry, and Your wrath has come, and the time for the dead to be judged, and the time of reward for Your servants, the prophets, and for the saints, and for those in whom is the fear of Your name, small and great, and the time of destruction for those who made the earth unclean. 11:19 And the house of Yahweh which is in heaven was open; and the ark of His agreement was seen in His house, and there were flames and voices and thunders and an earth-shock and a rain of ice.
[We also know this is true because we experience daily Yahweh's power and faithfulness in our own lives and the lives of others. The day is approaching when we will see Him face to face, let us be daily ready.]
(Rev 20:3 BBE) And put him [Satan/the evil one] into the great deep, and it was shut and locked over him, so that he might put the nations in error no longer, till the thousand years were ended: after this he will be let loose for a little time.
[This is for a future time after Yahshua's return, I believe.]
(2Ti 4:1-8 BBE) I give you orders, before Yahweh and the Messiah Yahshua, who will be the judge of the living and the dead, and by His revelation and His kingdom; 4:2 Be preaching the word at all times, in every place; make protests, say sharp words, give comfort, with long waiting and teaching; 4:3 For the time will come when they will not take the true teaching; but, moved by their desires, they will get for themselves a great number of teachers for the pleasure of hearing them; 4:4 And shutting their ears to what is true, will be turned away to belief in foolish stories. 4:5 But be self-controlled in all things, do without comfort, go on preaching the good news, completing the work which has been given you to do. 4:6 For I am even now being offered, and my end is near. 4:7 I have made a good fight, I have come to the end of my journey, I have kept the faith: 4:8 From now on, the crown of righteousness is made ready for me, which the Most High, the upright judge, Will give to me at that day: and not only to me, but to all those who have had love for his revelation.
(2Ti 4:8 BBE) From now on, the crown of righteousness is made ready for me, which the Most High, the upright judge, Will give to me at that day: and not only to me, but to all those who have had love for his revelation.
[There are many who teach of the rewards, in this life, of serving Yahweh. And as far as they teach there is some truth, but they leave out the promises given that a life lived for self is a life without eternal rewards. Yahshua promised some of us will be called upon to suffer even greater trials than He did, and none of us are promised this walk would be easy or fun. Just the opposite. If we are not ready to suffer for Them and Their truth, then why would we expect to share in the rewards promised to the faithful? We are told to study to show ourselves approved rightly handling His word, having done the study we are to share with those willing to listen. Do not try to teach those who are not interested, save it for the hungry who will take it to heart. Stay out of the other churches for they are not going to listen and if we trouble them we can find our selves on the wrong side of man's law. Saul said to follow his example and he only taught where the word was welcome. But he never refused to speak when asked, even at the risk of his life.
Great is Yahweh's faithfulness, let us return it in loving service.]
